An Evening with Tim Macartney Snape

"Giants of the Himalaya and Everest"

1st Helensburgh Scout Group will be presenting a evening with Tim Macartney Snape with an Audio Visual display on "Giants of the Himalaya and Everest" at the Helensburgh Workers Club on the 25th September at 7pm .

Tim was part of a team of Australian Team that pioneered a new unclimbed route up the North Face of Mount Everest in a quick lightweight style, without oxygen or Sherpa support. This climb is still regard as one of the hardest ever attempted on Everest and still has not been repeated.
Walt Unsworth, Everest historian, wrote, “…their actual achievement was astonishing; one of the greatest climbs ever done on the mountain”.
Then In 1990, Tim launched an ironman solo ordeal to ascend the entire 29,035 feet from sea level to the top of the world's highest peak.
He began his "Sea to Summit" expedition with a swim in the tepid waters of India's Bay of Bengal, and then set off on foot toward the distant Himalayan foothills. Four months later, after climbing solo from base camp and without the assistance of bottled oxygen, Sherpas or fellow climbers, he reached the summit again. The first man to climb Mount Everest — that is, the entire mountain from sea to summit.

Aussie Greg Child, a world-class mountaineer and author, described the ascent as, "more than a climbing feat, it's the truest ascent of Everest there's ever been."

The film that chronicled the climb, "Everest: Sea to Summit," was a popular prize winner in the 2001 Banff Mountain Film Festival .

Tim Macartney-Snape's resume lists other ascents on six Himalayan expeditions, all without bottled oxygen in lightweight style and most on previously unclimbed routes. Come and be blown away with an Audio Visual display on "Giants of the Himalaya and Everest".
